Sculpture by Minoru Ohira and illusionist works on paper by Echiko Ohira will be on exhibition at the Davis and Cline Gallery in Ashland, opening May 4th to continue through June 9, 2007.
Both artists were born and trained in Japan, but have been residents of Southern California for many years.
In these, their latest series of images, they bring fresh interpretations of forms in nature sifted through prisms thoroughly informed by modern and contemporary art.
Minoru's sleek and sensual forms can be seen as deriving from nature, metaphors for growth and regeneration the way that a bud that holds within it the mystery of the flower it will ultimately become, or the spirit of a passing bird.
Echiko's imagery, delicate and subtle, appears as layered, gossamer petals, elegantly assembled in concentric patterns lending each other substance and volume. In both artists 'works the objects of inspiration have undergone substantial change, as they transform into works of art. This process of metamorphosis has sent each one's work in a different direction as they attain new identities defined by the eyes, the hands and the sensibilities of separate individuals. They speak in different languages although they may have had similar points of departure.
His goal is to render an essence of form in three dimensions while her aims revolve around deconstructions of intricate linear patterns, invented color harmonies and variations in volume where none really exist.
