Devienna Anggraini
Is jewelry art? When it transcends ornamentation it can be, and this collection of work by Devienna Anggraini is a perfect case in point. Anggraini's work is not so much about ornamentation or even function for that matter, but more about the aesthetics of the piece as a stand-alone object. The work in this show is the result of her investigation into the nature of hinges and how jewelry looks when it is folded and put away.
Working in gold and silver, this collection of pieces should be seen as a group of transitional objects. How does it look when it is folded? How does it look when it is unfolded? How does it look when it is being worn or stored? The decision to focus on the design of the piece in its many transitional states has created works of great originality.
Anggraini was a finalist in the 2003 Davis and Cline BFA show. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 2003 and is pursuing her career as a jewelry artist in Eugene, Oregon
